Physical Therapy:
Certified Hand Therapist
Hand therapy is rehabilitation of the upper quadrant of
the body (hand, wrist, elbow & shoulder girdle). A hand
therapist is an occupational or physical therapist who
has become proficient in the treatment of the upper quadrant
through advanced continuing education, clinical experience,
and independent study. Examples of diagnoses that a hand
therapist may treat include: amputations, cumulative trauma
disorders, Dupuytren's contracture, fractures, nerve compression,
and tendon injuries. Many specialized techniques may be
utilized for treatment of the upper quadrant such as:
ADLtraining, desensitization, manual therapy, modalities,
sensory re-education, splinting, and work re-training.
A hand therapist uses special skills in assessment and
treatment to restore function and prevent dysfunction
so that an individual may participate in life activities
to the fullest potential.
